Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kavieng, New Ireland by Fowler (1931: 340), based on QM material. Specimens photographed in Kavieng region on 1–2 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey; others photographed at St. KVG9 ( Bismarck Sea side of southeastern Kavieng District) by Serge Andréfouët on 15 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, east of New Hanover, St. KR 154, at 6–20 m depth, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East Africa and Réunion east to Caroline, Line and Phoenix islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland (Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga. Found in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs, 2–25 m depth. Marine.
