Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens photographed on 2 June 2013, first dive, during ACIAR Aquarium Survey at Kavieng; a video of a specimen taken off Nubilus Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3– 32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to northern Line and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan, south to Exmouth Gulf (Western Australia), New South Wales (Australia), Lord Howe and Norfolk islands and Rapa. Found in coral-rich areas of shallow lagoon and semi-protected seaward coral reefs, 0–30 m depth. Marine.
