Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Emirau Island, St. Mathias Group by Kailola (1975: 165); a video of a specimen taken in Albatross Passage, southwestern Kavieng District, at 3–39 m depth, St. KR 51, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell). KFRS material.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 4.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line and Gambier islands, north to Izu Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales (Australia), New Caledonia and Tonga. Found in shallow lagoon and seaward coral reefs exposed to mild or moderate surge; juveniles on the shore or in tidal pools, 0–3 m depth. Marine.
