Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland by Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1830a: 454), based on MNHN material. Record from Nusa Island, Kavieng District based on USNM 275754 (11). Specimens photographed at St. KVGPMT50 (southeast of New Hanover) by Serge Andréfouët on 24 Aug. 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake, Marquesas and Gambier islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia, Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found in shallow lagoon and subtidal reef flats, forming large aggregations above staghorn Acropora thickets or smaller groups above isolated coral heads, 0–20 m depth. Marine.
