Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken off Nusa Island, Kavieng District, 2–18 m depth, St. KR 32, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken at Nubilus Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–32 m depth, St. KR 88, in 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes to Marshall Islands and Marquesas Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands and southern Japan, south to Australia, Lord Howe Island, New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in sheltered inshore reefs, lagoons and seaward coral reefs, 2–15 m depth. Marine.
