Hemigymnus fasciatus (Bloch 1792) —Barred thicklip wrasse

Status at New Ireland. New record, based on photograph taken on 1 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey in Kavieng District, and a specimen photographed by Serge Andréfouët off the southern tip of Bauddisson Island, Kavieng District, St. KVG15, on 17 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, off eastern New Hanover, at 7–41 m depth, St. KR 122, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Wake Atoll and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found on coral reefs and reef flats, 0–20 m depth. Marine.
