Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken west of Albatross Passage, southwestern Kavieng District, St. KR50, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken at Martha's Shoal, off eastern New Hanover, at 7–41 m depth, St. KR122, in 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Christmas Island and Cocos-Keeling Islands east to Hawaiian Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to Ryukyu Islands and southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New Caledonia, Tonga and Rapa. Solitary, in coastal or seaward reefs, 1–160 m depth. Marine.
