Aspidontus taeniatus Quoy & Gaimard 1834 —False cleanerfish

Status at New Ireland. New record, based on NTUM 11331 (1 specimen, 43.2 mm SL, St. CP 4492-10, off northwest coast of New Hanover); a video of a specimen taken in Steffen Channel, Kavieng District, St. KR 34, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa east to Marshall and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to northern Australia. Found in coral reefs, 1–112 m depth. Marine.

Remarks. This represents a new depth record, as the species was previously only recorded from depths of 1– 25 m depth.
