Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken off Nusaum Island, Kavieng District, at 9–18 m depth, St. KR 76, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken from Senta Passage, off eastern New Hanover, 5–16 m depth, at St. KR 118, in 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Fiji and Tonga, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Western Australia, New Caledonia, and Lord Howe Island. Found in coastal, lagoon and seaward coral reefs, 8–25 m depth. Marine.
