Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken in Steffen Strait, western Kavieng District at 3–18 m depth, St. KR 68, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken in Senta Pass, east of New Hanover at 5–12 m depth, St. KR 114, in 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Saint Brandon's Shoals and Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Australia. Found on sand bottoms of coastal and seaward reefs, associated with an alpheid shrimp, 5–28 m depth. Marine.
