Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kavieng, New Ireland in original description of Stiphodon atratus by Watson (1996: 115); species synonymised and record confirmed by Keith et al. (2015: 220–222). WAM material.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Eastern Java (Indonesia) east to Pohnpei (Micronesia) and Vanuatu, north to Palau, south to New Caledonia. Adults found in coastal streams in clear and oxygen-rich water, and in lower reaches of rivers, to an altitude of 50 m, while larvae live in coastal marine waters, 0–5 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
