Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 5 m depth, by Dean Tully on 18 Sept. 2012; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, east of New Hanover, St. KR 154, at 6–20 m depth, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Lord Howe and Norfolk islands and Rapa. Found on hard substrates of shallow lagoon and seaward coral and rocky reefs, 0–25 m depth. Marine.
