Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens photographed at St. KVG18 (south side of Bauddisson Island, Kavieng District) by Serge Andréfouët on 18 Aug. 2014; others photographed at St. KVG28 (southeast of New Hanover) by Serge Andréfouët on 24 Aug. 2014 .
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East Africa, South Africa, Mozambique Channel, Seychelles and western Mascarenes east to Hawaiian Islands, Marquesas Islands and Ducie (Pitcairn Group), north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Australia, New Caledonia and Rapa. Found on seaward coral reef slopes and drop-offs, 4–75 m depth. Marine.
