Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier 1816) —Indian mackerel
Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Port Praslin, New Ireland as Scomber loo by Lesson (1829: 277) and Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1832: 52), based on MNHN A2910 (see Collette 1966: 365). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2, 3.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to northwestern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in coastal bays, harbours and deep lagoons, usually in some turbid plankton-rich waters, 20–90 m depth. Marine.
