Thunnus obesus (Lowe 1839) —Bigeye tuna

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Hanover and New Ireland as Parathunnus sibiby Nakamura (1954: chart 3); reported as Parathunnus mebachi by Munro (1958: 264). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District by Dean Tully in Sept. 2015 .

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Circumglobal in tropical and warm temperate seas, in the western Pacific south to northern New Zealand. Oceanic, pelagic, 0–250 m depth. Marine.
