Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014; a video of a specimen taken off southern New Hanover at 4–51 m depth, St. KR 110, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian, Marquesas and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe and Norfolk islands and Rapa. Found in channels, moats, lagoon and seaward coral and rocky reefs with strong surge, 1–180 m depth. Marine.
