Naso vlamingii (Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1835) —Bignose unicornfish (Fig. 147)

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 129). Specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014; a specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 9 Feb. 2007; a video of a specimen taken at Tungelo Island, off southeastern New Hanover, at 3–46 m depth, St. KR 104, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 5.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Réunion east to Line, Marquesas and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan, south to southern Great Barrier Reef (Australia) and New Caledonia. Found in mid-water aggregations along seaward coral reefs, 1–50 m depth. Marine.
