Zebrasoma velifer (Bloch 1797) —Sailfin tang
Status at New Ireland. First recorded from West Harbour, New Hanover as Zebrasoma veliferum by Kailola (1975: 231); specimens collected in Kavieng area in June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey (see Teitelbaum et al. 2013: 15, Z. veliferum). KFRS material. Two specimens photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 4 m depth, by Dean Tully on 6 July 2011 .
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Hawaiian and Tuamotu islands, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to southern Great Barrier Reef (Australia), Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs from the lower surge zone; solitary juveniles found among rocks or coral of shallow protected, sometimes turbid reefs, 0–30 m depth. Marine.
