Sphyraena jello Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1829 —Pickhandle barracuda (Fig. 150)

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Kavieng, New Ireland by Munro (1958: 149). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 7 June 2014. Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 8 Feb. 2007 and 13 Oct. 2007; a video of a specimen taken at Anelaua Island, off eastern New Hanover, at 3–16 m depth, St. KR 98, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Tonga, south to New Caledonia. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs, including bays and estuaries, 2–200 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
