Cynoglossus kopsii (Bleeker 1851) —Short-headed tonguesole
Status at New Ireland. New record, based on NTUM 11222 (2 specimens, 49.9–66.0 mm SL, St. CP 4457-6-7, northeast of Bangatang Island), NTUM 11250 (1 specimen, 105.2 mm SL, St. CP 4458-26, 11.0 km west of Kavieng), NTUM 11311 (1 specimen, 70.4 mm SL, St. CP 4490-12, off northwest side of New Hanover), and NTUM 11367 (1 specimen, 109.7 mm SL, St. CP 4502-1, 6.7 km northwest of Kavieng).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: Persian Gulf and Madagascar east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to Taiwan, south to northern Australia. Solitary on mud bottoms in coastal waters, 24–450 m depth. Marine.
Remarks. The specimen NTUM 11367 represents a new depth record, as the species was previously known only from depths down to 204 m depth.
