Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Ireland as Ostracion cornutus by De Vis (1884: 457). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 10 m depth, by Dean Tully on 19 Sept. 2012.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Marquesas Islands and Tuamotu Archipelago, north to South Korea, central Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Australia, New Caledonia and Lord Howe Island. Found in on mud or sand habitats in lagoon and semi-sheltered seaward reefs, including seagrass beds, entering estuaries, 1–100 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
