Apechthis obscuratus (Cresson, 1865) comb. nov.
Pimpla obscurata Cresson, 1865: 36 .
A female (IES # 385) lacks a “Cr” label –the way Gundlach used to mark the specimens returned by Cresson; so there is no evidence that it was ever seen by Cresson, who stated (1865: 36) that he only saw a single specimen. Furthermore there is a note in Gundlach’s handwriting in his copy of Cresson’s paper that the specimen was returned to ANSP. Townes and Townes (1966) assigned this species to Ephialtes, but Ephialtes sensu Townes should correctly be referred to as Apechthis (see Fitton et al. 1988).
