Capitonius subgenus Foenomorpha

Diagnosis. Readily distinguishable from other species of Capitonius by the following combination of characters: anterodorsal portion of pronotum produced as a curl of cuticle that projects dorsally and posterorally (Fig. 1 A); head with vertex posterad lateral ocelli convex (Fig. 1 B); ratio of length to width of t1 1.2–4.5.

Discussion: in this group, the curled form of the anterodorsal portion of pronotum is the proposed synapomorphy for this clade; the lateral carina bordering the antennal scrobe is incomplete (Fig. 1 B), except in C. venustus where the lateral carina reaches the lateral ocelli; the ventral margin of the clypeus has three blunt tubercles (Fig. 1 C), except in Capitonius flavusassumentum Pitz n. sp. where a single median tooth is present; the tarsal claws are simple, lacking a basal lobe, except in C. flavusaussumentum where a basal lobe is present.

Distribution: New World, Mexico south through Central and South America.
