Tropicosa chelifasciata (Mello-Leitão, 1943) comb. nov.
(Figs 7‒14, 31)
Lycosa chelifasciata Mello-Leit „o, 1943: 161, figs 7, 7a (male holotype from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, B. Rambo leg., deposited in MNRJ 41682, examined and currently lost, see remarks below).
Lycosa langei Mello-Leit „o, 1947: 264, pl. 41, fig. 18 (male lectotype, subadult male and two female paralectotypes from Barigui [ca. 25°25'25"S, 49°18'22"W], Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, deposited in MHNCI 2512, 2513, 2514 and 2515, respectively, all examined and currently lost, see remarks below). Pinto-da-Rocha & Caron 1989: 1027. New synonymy
Schizocosa chelifasciata: Roewer 1955, 294.
Remarks. The holotype of Lycosa chelifasciata was reported as lost by Silva-Moreira et al. (2010) but was subsequently located and examined by ADB, and ultimately destroyed in the 2018 fire at the MNRJ. The type specimens of Lycosa langei were sent as a loan to, and examined by ADB, but they were destroyed in the 2010 fire at the IBSP. We were also able to examine several specimens deposited at the MHNCI (numbers 1371–1377) and identified as L. langei, all of them collected from the type locality by the same collector of the types. We compared these specimens with the original description of L. langei and found no significant differences. Comparison of specimens of Lycosa chelifasciata and Lycosa langei showed no significant differences, justifying the synonymy proposed herein.

Diagnosis. Males of Tropicosa chelifasciata can be recognized by the terminal apophysis uniformly broad (Figs 10a, 11b) and longer than in Tropicosa baguala . Additionally, the tegular lobe of Tropicosa chelifasciata has a single spiniform protuberance (Fig. 11a). Females can be recognized by the extremely expanded median septum and the straight opening of the hoods (Figs 7a, d, 8a).
Description. Male (MCTP 9865). Color in ethanol (Figs. 13a‒f): Carapace brown, covered by short white bristles; longitudinal median band uniformly yellow towards the back (Fig. 13a). Ocular area black, covered with black and white bristles, cephalic portion of the prosoma covered by sparse, large white bristles (Fig. 13b). Chillum membranous and divided. Condyle present and short. Sternum longer than wide, light brown, covered by short black bristles more abundant in the marginal area. Endites creamy and convergent; labium square shaped, darker than the endites; both endites and labium yellowish in their distal portion. All segments of legs yellow except on femora, which are darker (Fig. 13e). Opisthosoma all covered by tiny white bristles, the background olive, dispersed black bristles covering mainly the dorsum; heart mark present; a group of strong curved, dorsal white and black bristles on proximal part near cephalothorax (Fig. 13c). Venter yellow, sparsely covered by black bristles; both anterior lateral spinnerets wider and darker than both posterior lateral spinnerets, all of them cylindrical (Fig. 13d).
Palp tibiae cylindrical, cymbium piriform, tibia slightly wider apically; half the length of cymbium. Subtegulum rounded and clearly visible in ventral view, with a curved sperm duct (Figs 11c, 12d). Median apophysis laminar and pointed (Figs 11c, 12b, e); the ventral projection is triangular. (Figs 10b, 11a). Terminal apophysis partially sclerotized, curved, and same width throughout its length ending in point (Figs 10a, 11b). Palea rounded, partially sclerotized (Fig. 10c). Embolus slender, following the same curvature of tegular lobe (Figs 10a, 12a).
