This species belongs to the species-group hirtulus Español 1969 (differs from species-group byrrhoides Español, 1969 by the absence of distinct shoulders on elytra) including the species S. anadalusiacus (Aubé, 1861) with three subspecies, S. championi (Schilsky, 1899), S. espandensis Viñolas, 2016, S. hirtulus Wollaston, 1861 with four subspecies and S. wollastoni Español, 1969.
