Distribution.
Red Sea. Mediterranean Sea: WB, CB, AD, AS. New record for the Greek coast.
Habitat.
Shallow subtidal depths, on biogenic calcareous substrates, among photophilic algae and Posidonia oceanica rhizomes.
Remarks.
The species is regarded by many authors (e.g. Augener 1913, Fauvel 1919, Licher 2000) as a synonym of Syllis variegata Grube, 1860. Recent works (e.g. San Martín 2003, Çinar 2005) however, regard the two species as distinct, which is also supported by molecular analyses (Aguado et al. 2007).
