Sticherus ×subremotus (Jermy & T.G.Walker) J.Gonzales, comb. nov.
Gleichenia ×subremota Jermy & Walker (1985: 2).
Type:— TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO. Trinidad: Blanchisseuse Ward, 450 m, Walker T . 6416 (holotype BM) .
Distribution and ecology:— Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Trinidad; likely to be more widespread. It grows on open banks at forest edges or along roadsides, forming mixed colonies with S. interjectus and S. remotus at 60– 600 m.
Notes:— This hybrid between S. interjectus and S. remotus was cytologically studied and described by Jermy and Walker (1985). It differs from S. interjectus by the more rounded and broader bases of the bud scales, from S. remotus by the approximate segments, abaxial segment surfaces scales, and it is different from both these species by having less regularly shaped and darkened scale cells. Many species in the species complex around S. remotus have unequally developed 2 nd branches, and this pattern is particularly noticeable in S. × subremotus.
