Current status: Lixus hypocrita Chevrolat, 1866 is a valid species.
Type. In Chevrolat’s collection at SMNH, under the name “ Lixus hypocrita Chv., Rev. Zool. 1866, p. 27, Hispania, Aranjues, D. Lethierry, ferula ” is a female pinned through the right elytron (elytra hardly separated, fore right leg missing), bearing the handwritten label: “ Lixus hypocrita Chv. aranjeus, ombellifera a fl. jaune, Lett. sp.”, and fitting the description with type locality as Aranjuez. It is here designated as lectotype with “ Lectotypus, Ƥ, Lixus hypocrita Chev., Gültekin des. 2006”.
Remarks. Lixus hypocrita is related to Lixus cylindrus (Fabricius, 1781) and Lixus obesus Petri, 1904 . It is smaller than L. obesus, its punctures are wider and deeper along the elytral base, its rostrum is more curved and cylindrical. The rostrum of L. hypocrita is shorter than that of L. cylindrus, and on the elytra there is a transverse band near the apex but no longitudinal white bands.
