Genus Entomobrya Rondani, 1861

Diagnosis of the genus. Body colour pattern variable, from reduced (specimens mostly yellowish) to entirely pigmented; most species with clear longitudinal and/or transversal stripes or spots of pigment on dorsal body; eyes black. Body and appendages lacking scales, secondarily covered by several ciliate small to medium-sized chaetae; dorsal chaetotaxy mostly polymacrochaetotic, with some species showing a decreased number of secondary or even primary mac. Antennae without sub-segmentation, Ant. I mostly shorter than head length, Ant. IV usually the longest segment; Ant. IV with apical bulb. Eyes 8+8. Trunk S-chaetotaxy mostly as 2,2|1,2,2,+,3 on Th. II to Abd. V; Abd. IV with 2+2 bothriotricha. Abd. IV about 2.5 times or more the length of Abd. III in the midline. Trochanteral organ well developed, with several spine-like smooth chaetae. Dens typically crenulate, lacking spines. Mucro bidentate, sometimes with one reduced tooth; mucronal spine present and smooth (adapted from Jordana 2012; Zhang & Deharveng, 2015).
