Junior synonym of C. (Heterocentris) bicornuta Mocsáry, 1899 (Moure et al. 2007).

Type data

Cockerell (1912a) did not specify how many females he used to describe this species, but according to the labels of the type housed at AMNH, apparently he had only one specimen available collected by William Mann and Fred Baker in northern Brazil during the Stanford Expedition. This specimen is herein considered holotype, it is in good condition, with the following data label: Manaos, Brazil Mann & Baker [printed]\ Centris ceratocephala Ckll Type. [handwritten]\ ac 33337 [handwritten]\ AMNH _ IZC 00323435 [data matrix code] [printed].

Brazil: Amazonas State: Manaus (“Manaos”).

Comments

Moure et al. (2007) were not able to find the depository of the holotype of this species. Centris bicornuta occurs from Mexico to Argentina (Snelling 1984; Roig-Alsina 2000). According to the accession book at the AMNH, the number 33337 was assigned to about 100 specimens that were sent from Cockerell’s collection to the AMNH. This number is also present on the labels of the primary types of C. ceratocephala, C. euphenax, C. libertatis, C. maroniana and C. wilmattae (see below).
