Distribution. Palaearctic.

Material examined. 250 specimens (KUMN, SZIK, ZIN, ZMUN, SIZK) including: Zhytomyr Prov.: 1 spec. (SIZK) Zhytomyr, G. Proschiga leg., 30.v.1922; 5 spec. (SIZK) idem, 14.v.1925; 1 spec. (SIZK) Korostyshiv env., V. K. Odnosum leg., 7.vi.1977 .

Biology. Forests, floodplains, ruderal habitats. Adults occur in IV–VII. Feeds mostly on Urtica dioica (Urticaceae), but recorded from many other plants.

Note. This polymorphous species is represented by two subspecies occasionally considered as separate species: Ph. pomaceus pomaceus occurring in Europe, and Ph. pomaceus fessus Boh. occurring in Siberia. Ph. fessus has recently been recorded from Poland, that obviously based on misidentified specimens of Ph. jacobsoni .
