(x = 200 × 300 µm, n = 10), black, globose to subglobose, uni-loculate, immersed to slightly erumpent, solitary, scattered, forming dark black spots on the host surface, ostiolate. Ostiole 35 – 60 μm wide, central. Peridium 17 – 30 μm wide, several layers, from innermost towards outermost layers composed of light brown to brown cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium composed of dense, 1 – 2 μm wide, filamentous, cellular pseudoparaphyses, with indistinct septa. Asci 90 – 120 × 25 – 38 μm (x = 100 × 32 μm, n = 20), 8 - spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, pyriform, pedicellate, with furcate to obtuse end, apically rounded. Ascospores 20 – 27 × 10 – 13 μm (x = 24 × 11 μm, n = 30), partially overlapping, 1 – 3 - seriate, broadly ellipsoidal, muriform, 4 – 5 transverse septa, 2 – 3 longitudinal septa with a rounded apex and acute or truncate basal end, hyaline at immature stage, becoming olivaceous-brown at maturity, strongly constricted at the central septum and slightly constricted at the other septa, with guttules in each cell, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Not observed. Culture characteristics: — Colonies on PDA reaching 24 mm diameter after 5 days at 25 ° C, colonies from above: dark grey, circular, flat, entire edge, dense, cottony to fairly fluffy with sparse aspects, light grey at the margin; reverse: dark grey from the centre of the colony, cream at the margin. Material examined: — Thailand, Chiang Mai Province, on dead twigs of Alstonia scholaris (Apocynaceae), 12 March 2022, N. I. de Silva, NID 8 (CMUB 40047). Notes: — The holotype of Muriformispora magnoliae has been reported from dead twigs of Magnolia sp. in China (de Silva et al. 2022). Our collection has similar morphologies to the holotype by globose to subglobose, uni-loculate, immersed to slightly erumpent ascomata, pyriform, apically rounded, pedicellate asci, broadly ellipsoidal, muriform, hyaline to brown ascospores with 4 – 5 transverse septa and 2 – 3 longitudinal septa (de Silva et al. 2022). In the phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU, ITS, tef 1, and rpb 2 sequence data, our strain CMUB 40047 clusters with the ex-type MFLUCC 19 – 0036 and MFLU 18 – 2645 with strong statistical support (100 % ML, 1.00 BYPP) (Figure 1). Holotype: — CMUB 40048 Saprobic on dead and decaying twigs of Cassia fistula L. (Fabaceae). Sexual morph: Not observed. Asexual morph: Coelomycetous. Conidiomata 110 – 140 μm high × 160 – 180 μm diam. (x = 130 × 170 µm, n = 10), pycnidial, solitary to gregarious, globose, subglobose, uni-locular, dark brown to black, immersed to semi-immersed, becoming erumpent at maturity, ostiole indistinct. Conidiomatal wall 30 – 45 µm wide, composed of thick-walled, dark brown cells of textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells 6 – 9 × 2 – 3 μm (x = 7.5 × 2.4 μm, n = 15), phialidic, cylindrical, hyaline, smooth-walled. Conidia 4 – 9 × 2.5 – 5 μm (x = 6.5 × 3.5 μm, n = 30), initially hyaline, becoming brown when mature, oblong to ovoid, straight, or slightly curve, apex obtuse, base truncate or sometimes both ends obtuse, one-septate, guttulate, thick-walled. Culture characteristics: — Colonies on PDA reaching 25 mm diameter after 5 days at 25 ° C, colonies from above: light brown, circular, entire edge, dense; reverse: light brown at the margin, dark brown in the centre. Material examined: — Thailand, Chiang Mai Province, dead twigs of Cassia fistula (Fabaceae), 03 September 2022, N. I. de Silva, NID 19 (CMUB 40048, holotype), CMD 014 (CMUB 40049). Notes: — According to the multi-gene phylogeny, our collection (CMUB 40048 and CMUB 40049) demonstrated a sister relationship to Muriformispora magnoliae with 100 % ML, 1.00 BYPP statistical support (Figure 1). Since the only existing species of the genus, M. magnoliae was described based on its sexual morph characters, it would be difficult to assess morphological differences between the new collection (CMUB 40048 and CMUB 40049) and M. magnoliae. A comparison of nucleotide differences (without gaps) between M. magnoliae (MFLUCC 19 – 0036) and M. thailandica (CMUB 40048) showed 21 / 492 (4.3 %) differences in the ITS region, 37 / 909 (4.07 %) differences in the tef 1 region, and 47 / 844 (5.6 %) differences in the rpb 2 region.
