03EC87A6FFCAB64554F2FD55EDA8FAC2.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Fruit flies of genus Acroceratitis are characterized by the presence of a dorsoapically pointed first flagellomere with plumose arista, head higher than long, wings with yellow to brown bands with orange-yellow or yellow patches, sometimes apically diffuse, and with the transverse band from pterostigma enclosing r-m crossvein, one apical spine on midtibia, male with enlarged abdominal tergite 2, female with two spermathecae comprised of tightly set coils (Hancock & Drew, 1999). Additionally, the proctiger in males is 2 − 3 times larger than the epandrium and densely covered with fine hairs, which can be considered a synapomorphy for the genus.	en	David, K. 03EC87A6FFCBB64354F2FA18EC21FE6E.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis: Resembling A. striata (Froggatt) and A. parastriata David & Hancock in having a large black spot on postpronotum; scutellum mostly black with yellow basal area and elongate oviscape, but can be differentiated from A. parastriata by the yellow mediotergite, entirely fulvous abdominal segments, absence of apical spots on the scutellum, wing with subapical and posterior apical band not fused with costal band, and from A. striata by the oviscape longer than the abdomen and absence of yellow apical scutellar spots. It also resembles A. tenmalaica Hancock & Drew in scutellar and wing markings but can be separated easily by postpronotal lobe with fuscous / black marking and abdominal tergite 3 fulvous / yellow without black markings.	en	David, K. A record from Kemmangundi, Karnataka by Hancock & McGuire (2002), as A. distincta, is possibly of this species. Both species differ from the similar A. hardyi Hancock & Drew in having the transverse hyaline discal wing band extensively interrupted with the hyaline spots out of alignment. Male with epandrium sclerotized, lateral surstylus (less sclerotized) broad, longer than epandrium, proctiger larger than epandrium densely covered with fine hairs (Figs. 23 c, 24 c). Phallus short (1.6 mm long) excluding glans of phallus; glans (0.3 mm) with well developed sclerotisation, preglans lobe prominent (Fig. 25 c). Oviscape (1.54 − 1.64 mm) in female brown with apical and basal fuscous markings, 10 − 12 finger-like projections on distal end of eversible membrane (Fig. 27 c) (1.65 − 1.83 mm long), 2 coiled spermathecae (Fig. 28 c), elongate aculeus tip (1.49 − 1.64 mm long) with blunt apex (Fig. 26 c).	en	David, K. 03EC87A6FFC6B64854F2FE73ED09FD2A.taxon	description	Phylogenetic analysis (Fig. 29) using COI sequences of seven species of Acroceratitis and eight other species of Gastrozonini with two species of Bactrocera (Dacini) as outgroup supported the monophyly of genus Acroceratitis with good statistical support (bootstrap value- 98). In this study and from the published literature (Hardy, 1973, 1974), all species examined have the proctiger much larger than the epandrium like other Gastrozonini but wholly covered with dense fine hairs, which is unique in Tephritidae and probably a synapomorphy for the genus.	en	David, K.
