Remarks. The relationships between this species and two congeners, P. militaris and P. heterochrous , are discussed in the Remarks of P. militaris .

Distribution. Gulf of Thailand, Philippines Islands, Indonesia, New Guinea, western and eastern Australia, Nansha Islands in China; Taiwan, Ryukyu Islands, New Caledonia, and the Loyalty Islands; shallow water to about 55 m, frequently in association with corals ( Haig 1979; Hsieh, et al. 1997; Yang & Naiyanetr 1997; present study).
