Description. Female. Specimen from Mt. Hakusan ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 f). Length 16 mm. Head brown ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 d–e), labrum and malar space yellowish brown, narrow posterior margin of clypeus, supraclypeal area, frons, lower 0.7 of inner orbit, ocellar area, narrow anterior margin of postocellar area and posterior side of head largely black; basal two antennomeres entirely, basal 0.4 of antennomere 3 yellow brown, apical 0.6 of antennomere 3 and remaining antennomeres dark brown, antennomere 3 more or less black at middle ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 e). Thorax black, broad posterior margin of pronotum, tegula, lateral stripe on mesoscutal middle lobe, broad anterior margin and narrow posterior margin of parapsis, mesoscutellum (excluding appendage), metascutellum and cenchrus pale brown. Abdomen brown to pale brown, basal 0.8 (middle) to 0.6 (lateral) of tergite 1 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 e), basal 0.3–0.4 of tergites 3–7, short lateral macula and narrow anterior margin of tergite 2, about basal 0.4–0.7 of each sternite black; ovipositor sheath largely brown. Body hairs brown to pale brown. Legs black, hind trochanter entirely, broad anterior stripe and broad apex of fore and middle femora, fore and middle tibiae entirely pale brown, hind tibia brown to dark brown, all tarsi yellow brown. Wings yellowish infuscate in anterior part and gradually paler toward posterior margin, vein C and pterostigma pale brown, posterior of vein Sc+R and most of vein M+Cu blackish; hind wing weakly infuscate, slightly paler than forewing.

Punctures on labrum small and dense, narrow interspaces between punctures weakly microsculptured; punctures on clypeus dense and large, interspaces between punctures smooth, shiny ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 e); inner orbit and hind orbit densely punctured, interspaces linear, weakly microsculptured, less shiny; frons densely and coarsely punctured, interspaces very narrow and microsculptured, almost dim; punctures on temple and postocellar area much sparser than frons, surface very weakly microsculptured, moderately shiny ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 f); malar space densely punctured, shiny; upper corner of pronotum moderately punctured and shiny, depressed part of pronotum coarsely punctured and microsculptured, almost mat; mesoscutal middle lobe and lateral lobe densely punctured, interspaces very narrow, distinctly microsculptured, almost dim; mesoscutellum densely punctured with narrow smooth interspaces, less shiny; mesoscutellar appendage weakly coriaceous, impunctate; parapsis and metapostnotum densely microsculptured ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 e); punctures on upper half of mesepisternum large and very dense, interspaces very narrow, hardly shiny; punctures on lower half of mesepisternum small and much sparse, surface indistinctly microsculptured, distinctly shiny; mesepimeron and metapleuron strongly microsculptured mixed with some large but shallow punctures; abdominal tergite 1 densely microsculptured, almost mat, narrow lateral side densely punctured, very narrow posterior margin weakly coriaceous, less shiny; tergite 2 hardly punctured, densely microsculptured ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 e), other tergites densely microsculptured mixed with dense or sparse punctures, almost mat; median part of tergite 8–9 weakly microsculptured, feebly shiny; surface of ovipositor sheath weakly microsculptured mixed with some shallow punctures.

Hairs on dorsum of head and mesopleuron dense and almost straight, about 0.9 times as long as diameter of median ocellus ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 d–e); hairs on mesonotum dense and about 0.6 times as long as diameter of median ocellus; dorsum of abdominal tergites 1–3 largely glabrous except for narrow middle stripe ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 e), other tergites evenly pubescent; mesoscutellar appendage and intertergites of abdomen glabrous.

Labrum broad, anterior margin round, not acute; anterior margin of clypeus very weakly incised in entire length, almost truncate; malar space about as long as diameter of median ocellus ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 e); mandibles as Figs 11 View FIGURE 11 o– p; hind orbit round, without occipital carina; distance between eyes at level of anterior tentorial pits 1.4 times as long as longest axis of eye ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 e); middle fovea round, deep, closed; lateral fovea distinct; frons small, very short, frontal ridge broad and round; POL: OOL: OCL=15: 25: 26; interocellar furrow broad and very deep, postocellar furrow fine and shallow, hardly bent forward; postocellar area roundly elevated, about 1.3 times as broad as long; lateral furrow deep and very broad, weakly curved, distinctly divergent backwards; head roundly dilated behind eyes in dorsal view ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 d). Antenna as long as thorax, antennomere 3 about 1.1 times as long as antennomeres 4 and 5 together and 0.8 times as long as antennomeres 6–9 together, antennomere 7 about as long as broad ( Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 e). Mesoscutal middle lobe with narrow but distinct middle furrow; mesoscutellum roundly elevated, anterior margin almost truncate, hardly protruding, transverse anterior furrow deep; mesoscutellar appendage short with middle length about as long as diameter of median ocellus; cenchrus transverse, much broader than long, CD=1.6 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 e); mesepisternum roundly and weakly elevated at middle, without blunt ridge. Venation as Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 f, cell 2Rs about 0.9 times as long as cells 1R1+1Rs, cell A of forewing strongly constricted at basal 0.25, where distance between 1A and 2A+3A 2.5 times as broad as vein 2A+3A, first abscissa of vein M 0.9 times as long as 1m-cu, vein 2r1 meeting cell 2Rs at apical 0.35–0.45. Triangular middle lobe of sternite 7 very large and broad, about as broad as lateral straight posterior margin of sternite 7 ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 i). Ovipositor sheath 1.1 times as long as front tibia and 0.9 times as long as middle tibia, apical sheath as long as basal sheath, narrowly truncate at apex in lateral view. Male. Specimen from Minokoshi ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 g). Body length 14 mm. Color, punctation and structure similar to female except for following: malar space 0.5 times as long as diameter of median ocellus; distance between eyes at level of anterior tentorial pits 1.2 times as long as longest axis of eye ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 h); head hardly dilated behind eyes in dorsal view, POL: OOL: OCL= 15: 29: 30 ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 g); punctures on temple denser ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 i); antenna as Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 f; subgenital plate about as long as broad, apical margin broadly and obtusely truncate; harpes, volsella and gonolacinia as Fig. 10f; penis valve as Fig. 10e, middle tubercle of valviceps long and weakly convex.

Variation. Black macula on head sometimes reduced; mesonotum sometimes largely brown to orange; upper of mesepisternum sometimes with a large or small brown macula; abdominal tergite 3 sometimes largely brown, basal black band almost absent; anterior yellow shade of forewing varying from quite deep to light.

Distribution. Japan ( Fig. 12 View FIGURE 12 ).

Host plant. Actinidia arguta Plauch ( Okutani 1956; Yasumatsu 1957; Togashi 1995; Shikata & Itakura 2009)

Remarks. This species is endemic to Japan. It is similar to N. testaceoa . See above key for the differences between the species and its congeners.

No distinct difference has been confirmed between N. hakusana and N. itoi while comparing the holotypes of the two species. The differences between the two species pointed by Togashi (1995) fall into the variation range of N. itoi .

Maxwell (1958) studied the internal anatomy of the larva of this species. Togashi (1995) described the larva and reported some biological characters of this species under the name of N. hakusana .

Takeuchi (1951) stated that there was one more paratype male with the same data as the holotype but it was not found in OPU when the first two authors visited the university in March, 2014.
