Synonym Dasychone Sars, 1862

Remarks

Kölliker (1858) selected Amphitrite bombyx Dalyell (1853) as type for Branchiomma . Dasychone decora Sars (1862) was the first described species for Dasychone Sars , but both species and genus are junior synonyms. Hartman (1959) indicated that D. decora was the same species as Branchiomma infarcta ( Krøyer, 1856, as Sabella ) and examination of that material (ZMUH 517163 and ZMUC respectively, PKJ) showed that she was correct. Dasychone has been used by many authors, since up to about 1938. Johansson (1927) however, restored Branchiomma Kölliker , restricting the genus to species that resembled Branchiomma bombyx in having many paired compound eyes along the radioles (the rest of the species, with a single, terminal, compound, radiolar eye were placed in Megalomma ). Johansson, however, should have changed specific name endings, which were suitable for Dasychone , but not for Branchiomma ( KnightJones, 1994) , because omma is neuter. The morphological characters of the type species Branchiomma bombyx (Dalyell) were studied by Fitzhugh (1989), as part of his comparative generic diagnoses, and some species hitherto in Branchiomma were transferred to Pseudobranchiomma Jones by KnightJones (1994).
