Derivation of Name. The specific epithet refers to the country of Costa Rica and is used as a noun in apposition.

Diagnosis. This is the only species of the subgenus Tupania described from south of Mexico and north of Brazil (Peck et al. 1998). The subgenus is characterized by the flabellate antenna ( Figs. 1 View Fig , 2 View Figs ), whereas the subgenus Adelops lacks this antennal apomorphy. The species is characterized by the shape of the aedeagus and spermatheca.

Description. Shape elongate oval. Body length 3.8–4.1 mm, body width 1.9–2.1 mm. Color uniform dark brown except antennal base lighter brown. Antenna medium length ( Fig. 2 View Figs ), reaching to base of pronotum when laid back; club segments flabellate (segments 5–10 elongated and pointing anteriorly when antennae are held to the sides), and with club segments silvery pruinose in appearance. Pronotum widest at base, with fine dense transverse striae. Elytra with fine dense oblique striae. Flight wings functional. Mesosternal carina distinct, of medium development in profile. Aedeagus long, thin, gently curved to apex ( Fig. 3 View Figs ); dorsal view of tip slightly ogival ( Fig. 4 View Figs ); internal flagellum (internal sac) long and thin, slightly undulous. Spermatheca shaft of uniform thickness ( Fig. 5 View Figs ), basal (apical) end swollen and with enlarged distal tip ( Fig. 6 View Figs ).

Notes. This is the most frequently collected species of Costa Rican Ptomaphagus . All records are from forest and cloud-forest habitats, from 700 m to 1,920 m elevation, and from the months of February to July.
