Kochlorine View in CoL View at ENA sp. A

Deposited material: Holotype, SAMC-A091085 , Isipingo , KwaZulu-Natal, 21 September 2017, 1 specimen collected from Purpura panama shell . Paratype, SAMC-A091137 , Isipingo , KwaZulu-Natal, 21 September 2017, 1 dissected specimen from Purpura panama shell .

Other records. 1 specimen used for SEM collected from Purpura panama shell.

Diagnosis. Similar to K. bocqueti , but with following differences: teeth on opercular bar not lance-shaped, shorter, broader, more arrowhead-shaped, ranging from 5–8; orificial knob not as well developed, less globular, with spines and setae.

Description. Female, length 2.15 mm, width 1.2 mm. Body oval-shaped ( Figs. 21A View FIGURE 21 ; 23A View FIGURE 23 ). Opercular bar 0.75 mm, posterior processes with small simple teeth and setae and simple spine apically (fig. 22D, E). Opercular bar with two rows of teeth, row of bifid teeth laterally and row of ‘arrowhead-shaped’ teeth (5–8), while some are bifid (figs 22A, C, D; 23B). Comb collar long, with feather-like cuticular projections, fused at their bases (fig. 22F). Orificial knob not well developed, with simple teeth and setae (fig. 23C). Lateral surface of opercular area with broad multifid scales (fig. 22B). Colour red/purple below opercular bar when examined fresh, turning dull brown when preserved in ethanol (fig. 21A). Burrow opening narrow, oval-shaped (fig. 21B).

Terminal cirri with three pairs and two-segmented caudal appendages, with setae on terminal segment, pedestal absent (fig. 23D, E). Mouth cirri with three-segmented posterior ramus, shorter than three-segmented anterior ramus, both rami with long plumose setae (fig. 23H). Mandible with four large teeth, three smaller teeth between third and fourth teeth; large denticle between first and second teeth, inferior angle with dense setae (fig. 23F). Maxillule with two long upper cuspidate setae, notch with short, sharp setae, several setae on lower margin (fig. 23G). No males observed.

Hosts. Found exclusively on Purpura panama shells to date.

Distribution. Isipingo (2959’44.1”S, 3057’00.8”E) in KwaZulu-Natal.

Variation. Females range in length from 2 0–2.6 mm (mean = 2.25 mm) and width 1.05–1.75 mm (mean = 1.33 mm). Opercular bar 0.75 mm.

Remarks. Only three individuals were observed, one from each of three different shells. One was found in the same shell as 44 A. utinomii specimens. This species differs from most other species in the genus in that it has arrowhead-shaped teeth on the opercular bar. Only two species have similar-shaped teeth, these being K. bocqueti and K. anchorella . Kochlorine sp. A differs from K. bocqueti , as it has an orificial knob that is less developed and is not as rounded or globular, also it has fewer arrowhead-shaped teeth on the opercular bar, which is larger, more broad and shorter. Posterior process has a spine that branches off at the apex, unlike K. bocqueti . Differs from K. anchorella as the arrowhead-shaped teeth are a different shape and not as rounded. Labrum and maxilla not observed.
