Type material. Eudamus penidas Hewitson, 1867 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from Santarém [Pará, Brazil]. One male syntype was found at NHMUK with the same characteristics published in the original description, and illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) with the following labels: / Type [verso from the same label:] penidas Hew / Santarem/ Santarem. Hewitson Coll. 79–69 Eudamus penidas . Hew/ 37/ [label with genitalia attached]/ BMNH(E) 1236495/. In order to stabilize the identity of this species, this male specimen is hereby designated lectotype of Eudamus penidas Hewitson, 1867 and the following labels will be attached: Lectotypus / Lectotype Eudamus penidas Hewitson, 1867 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. These labels will be sent to the curator for the collection.

Telemiades ceramina Herrich–Schäffer, 1869 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from ‘Tropical America’. One male syntype was found at ZMHU with the same characteristics published in the original description, and illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) with the following labels: / Typus/ 5040/ 78:1[?]/ ceramina HSch Prod[romus [III], p.] 69.[number]6/ 78:1 ceramina H. Sch. type ( mygdon Möschler ) uncinata Hpf. [?]/ uncinata N. Pará Sieber/. In order to stabilize the identity of this species, this male specimen is hereby designated lectotype of Telemiades ceramina Herrich–Schäffer, 1869 . The lectotype has a label with the same data published in the original description, and the following labels will be attached: / Lectotypus / Lectotypus Telemiades ceramina Herrich–Schäffer, 1869 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. These labels will be sent to the curator for the collection.

Telegonus mygdon Möschler, 1877 was described based on the female [holotype] from Paramaribo [ Suriname]. The Möschler collection is deposited at ZMHU, however no syntypes of T. mygdon were found. In order to sta- bilize the identity of this species, one female specimen is hereby designated neotype of T. mygdon . The specimen has the same morphological characters illustrated in the original description (Möschler 1877: pl. 3, fig. 14) and well discussed by Evans (1953), and is deposited at DZUP with the following labels: / NEOTYPUS / 5–VIII–1988 Ariquemes, RO[ndônia] [ Brazil] Miers leg/ OM 18.685/ Neotypus Telegonus mygdon Möschler, 1877 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/.

Proteides aesopus Plötz, 1882 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from “Java”. The type material of Plötz is deposited at ZMHU and ZSM, however no syntypes of P. aesopus were found in these museums. In order to stabilize the identity of this species, one male specimen is hereby designated neotype of Proteides aesopus Plötz, 1882 . The specimen has the same characteristics published in the original description and well discussed by Evans (1953), and is deposited at DZUP with the following labels: / NEOTYPUS / 23–30–VIII–2014, Rio Moa, P[ar]Q.[ue] NAC.[ional] SERRA DO DIVISOR ( SÉDE), MÂNCIO LIMA, ACRE, BRASIL, MIELKE, CASAGRANDE, CARNEIRO, DIAS, DOLIBAINA, SIEWERT & SALIK LEG 7° 26’ 52’’ S, 73° 39’ 55’’/ DZ 36.118/ Neotypus Proteides aesopus Plötz, 1882 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/.

Telemiades uncinata Plötz, 1882 (Hopffer in litt.) is considered nomen nudum, since it was mentioned as synonym of Telemiades ceramina Herrich–Schäffer, 1869 . The male uncinata specimen is housed at ZMHU with the same labels of T. ceramina .

Telemiades megalloides Schaus, 1902 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from Peru. Schaus attested that the type specimen has the No. 5972 U.S. N.M. Two syntypes (one male and one female) were found at USNM with the same code mentioned by Schaus, and both are illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) with the following labels: / Peru / Telemiades megalloides type Schs/ Type No. 5972 U.S. N.M./ Collection W. Schaus/. In order to stabilize the identity of this species, the male specimen is hereby designated lectotype of T. megalloides . The lectotype has a label with the same data published in the original description, and the following labels will be attached: / Lectotypus / Lectotypus Telemiades megalloides Schaus, 1902 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. The female specimen is hereby designated paralectotype and the following labels will also be attached: / Paralectotypus / Paralectotypus Telemiades megalloides Schaus, 1902 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. These labels will be sent to the curator for the collection.

Pythonides hoyti Weeks, 1906 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from Suapure [Bolivar], Venezuela. One female syntype was found at MCZ with the following labels: / 1/25/[19]00/ SUAPURE VENEZUELA / M. C. Z. Type 16687/ Pyth. hoyti / A G Weeks Collection/ Jan.–Jun. 2001 MCZ Image Database/. In order to stabilize the identity of this species, this female specimen is hereby designated lectotype of P. hoyti . The lectotype has a label with the same data published in the original description, and the following labels will be attached: / Lectotypus / Lectotypus Pythonides hoyti Weeks, 1906 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. These labels will be sent to the curator for the collection.

Diagnosis. FW length: males 19–21 mm (n=20) and females 20–22 mm (n=4). Telemiades penidas is distinguished from the other species of the genus by the following characters: FW with four triangular hyaline doscal spots; uncus with distal margin rounded, ventrally slightly curved and with one pair of truncated lobes; lamella antevaginalis symmetrical and with irregular margin of lateral expansions.

Variation. The ground color could be darker in some specimens. Also, some specimens could have larger spots on both wings.

Natural History. Immatures have been reported on Inga sp. (Moss 1941). Several males were collected using the Ahrenholz technique ( Lamas et al. 1993) at National Park of Serra do Divisor, Mâncio Lima, Acre, Brazil.

Distribution. Telemiades penidas occurs in forested areas of Amazonia, with records in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname, and Brazil.

Taxonomic discussion. Eudamus penidas Hewitson, 1867 was transferred to Telemiades by Herrich–Schäffer (1869). In the same work, Herrich–Schäffer described Telemiades ceramina and later Plötz (1882) considered Telegonus mygdon Möschler, 1877 and Telemiades uncinata Plötz, 1882 as synonyms of it. Evans (1953) synonymized T. ceramina , T. mygdon , T. uncinata , Telemiades megalloides Schaus, 1902 and Pythonides hoyti Weeks, 1906 with T. penidas , all of which have been adopted to this day. Analysis of the existing type material of the species mentioned above supports the synonym with T. penidas . Plötz (1882) described Proteides aesopus based on an unknown number of specimens from “Java”. After its description, Shepard (1931) transferred P. aesopus to Telemiades and Evans (1947) synonymized it with T. penidas without outlining the reasons for it. Plötz’s specimens are supposedly deposited at ZMHU and ZSM but it was not possible to find specimens of P. aesopus there. The characteristics in the description of P. aesopus agree with T. penidas and, for this reason, the synonymy of the former with the latter remains valid. However, it is possible that “Java” is not an accurate locality for the species. The type locality of other species described by Plötz were erroneously interpreted from the original publication: Libra anatolica (Plötz, 1883) described from “Asia” (the species occur in south Brazil) and Pyrgus ( Syrichtus [sic]) argina Plötz, 1884 (now synonymous with Amblyscirtes hegon (Scudder, 1863)) described from “Brisbane” [ Austrália] (occurs in North America).
