Vellozia epidendroides Martius ex Schultes & Schultes (1829: 292) . ( Fig. 1A – D ).

Type: — BRAZIL. s.l., s.d. (fl.), Martius s.n. (holotype, M [ M 0213204]!).

Syn.: Vellozia gracilis Seubert (1847: 81) . Type: — BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Serra de Santo Antônio [“ S. de S. Ant.”], s.d. (fr.), Sellow B 1315 C 308 (holotype, B [ B 100243299]!; isotypes, B [ B 100243297, B 100243298]!, K!). Vellozia leptopetala Goethart & Henrard in Henrard (1937: 374). Type: — BRAZIL. Minas Gerais: Serra da Lapa, November 1824 (fl. & fr.), [Langsdorff &] Riedel s.n. (holotype, L [ L 0041320]!; probable isotype, LE [8 sheets]!), syn. nov.

Notes: — Vellozia leptopetala was based on a Riedel’s collection that corresponds to V. epidendroides , a much older name. Among the paratypes of V. leptopetala, Gardner 5230 also represents V. epidendroides , and Glaziou 13266 has been also included by Goethart & Henrard (in Henrard 1937) among the paratypes of V. variegata Goethart & Henrard in Henrard (1937: 381). Vellozia leptopetala was mistakenly taken by Smith & Ayensu (1976: 88) as the correct name for V. epidendroides var. divaricata L.B. Sm. , and for V. epidendroides var. major L.B. Sm. Since then, V. leptopetala has been inadvertently used to designate these varieties ( Sazima 1978, Pinto et al. 1983, Menezes 1984, Menezes & Mello-Silva 1987, Salatino et al. 1989, Sazima & Sazima 1990, Williams et al. 1991, Menezes & Castro 2000, Franceschinelli et al. 2006, Garcia et al. 2007, Jacobi & Sarto 2007), which represent a clearly distinct taxon. For solving this situation, new synonyms of V. epidendroides and a new name are here presented.
