Phyladelphus thalhammeri Becker, 1910: 54 View in CoL

Described from Hungary and reported from countries adjacent to the Mediterranean and Black Seas, this species has not yet been found on the African mainland, but is likely to occur in coastal North Africa.

Further material: 5♂ 5♀, TURKEY: Urla , dry wild oats patch, 6.vii.1997, J.C. Deeming ; 1♂ 1♀, Izmir, Bornova, Ege University Farm , mixed grasses, 17.vii.1997, J.C. Deeming (all in NMWC) .

Undeposited larvae of this species, P. geminus and P. maraisi dissected from material listed here have in common a dense field of large coarsely pointed spicules dorsally on the anterior margin of the first thoracic segment, and of which the largest are in the more posterior part of the field. In the initial penetration of plant tissue such might serve as an anchor to allow the mouth hooks greater purchase and a speedier penetration.
