Zatypota Förster, 1869: 166 View in CoL . Type-species: Ichneumon percontatorius Müller , by subsequent designation ( Viereck, 1914).

Polysphinctopsis Habermehl, 1917: 167. Type-species: Polysphincta eximia Schmiedeknecht (= Glypta albicoxa ), by monotypy.

Lycorinopsis Haupt, 1954: 110. Type-species: Lycorinopsis lombifer Haupt (= Ichneumon percontatorius Müller ), by original designation.

Small to very small ichneumonids, predominantly dark brown to black in color, most Japanese species with some yellow to reddish brown marks especially on head and metasoma. Gauld & Dubois (2006) provides a good description of the genus, which we do not repeat here. Chief distinguishing features as follows: second to fourth metasomal tergites with central area flat or weakly and evenly convex, bordered posteriorly by posterolateral oblique grooves. Usually anterolateral oblique grooves present on T2 and T3 ( Figs 110–121 View FIGURES 110 – 121 ), delimiting rhombic central area. Propodeum with posterior transverse carina complete and horseshoe-shaped in almost all species ( Figs 62–73 View FIGURES 62 – 73 ). Hind tibia without inner longitudinal groove. In most species, palpi formula 4: 3 (occasionally 5: 3), occipital carina complete medio-dorsally ( Figs 14–25 View FIGURES 14 – 25 ) (incomplete in Z. chryssophaga sp. nov. and two Costa Rican species), latero-median longitudinal carinae of propodeum reach back to posterior transverse carina, epomia present, distal abscissa of vein Cu 1 in hind wing absent ( Figs 98– 109 View FIGURES 98 – 109 ).

In Japan, Zatypota species are likely to be confused with species of Sinarachna , two unrecorded species of which occur in Japan, but the latter can be distinguished from Zatypota by the mesoscutum, which is entirely covered with short and dense pubescence, and by the medio-dorsally incomplete occipital carina. Although the dorso-median part of the occipital carina is incomplete in Z. chryssophaga and some extralimital species, these species have an almost bare and polished mesoscutum. A total of twelve species, including nine new and one newly recorded species, of the genus are recognized in Japan. Species of the genus can be divided into three groups ( Townes & Townes 1960; Gauld & Dubois 2006). In the bohemani -group, the lower end of the epomia is remote from the lower edge of pronotum and turns posteriorly, the distal abscissa of vein Cu1 of the hind wing is often present, propodeum is coriaceous, area petiolaris of the propodeum is usually not well defined basally, the central rhombic area of the metasomal tergites is coriaceous. Members of the discolor -group, with the epomia straight, reaching or almost reaching the ventral edge of pronotum, distal abscissa of vein Cu1 of the hind wing is absent, area petiolaris of the propodeum is completely bounded by a sharp carina, the central rhombic area of the metasomal tergites is usually polished, or rarely coriaceous. Townes & Townes (1960) mentioned that Z. percontatoria was of intermediate position between these two groups. The morsei -group was described by Gauld (1991) based on two Costa Rican species. These species have a broadly incomplete occipital carina and lack the lateromedian longitudinal carina of the propodeum. All Japanese species belong to the discolor -group.
