( Figs 9–11 View Figure 9 View Figure 10 View Figure 11 )

Material examined

Holotype: female. New Caledonia, Mount Panié , c. 400–500 m above sea level. Moss from rock and tree, 2 June 1986. Leg. J. Balogh ( HNHM) . Paratypes, female and male in NHMG, three females and two males in HNHM. Locality and date same as in holotype .

Description of female

Length of idiosoma 510–530 µm, width 370–390 µm (n = 5). Shape of idiosoma oval.

Dorsal side ( Figures 9A View Figure 9 and 11A View Figure 11 ). Marginal and dorsal shields completely separated. Dorsal shield bearing two types of setae, most setae smooth and needle-like, short in row J and anterior region (c.15–20 µm) and long on margins (c.45–50 µm). Other type of dorsal setae marginally pilose and c.30–35 µm. Marginal setae marginally pilose on anterior and caudal area of idiosoma (c.50–60 µm), other marginal setae smooth and needle-like (c.30 µm). Dorsal and marginal shield covered by oval pits, marginal shield on caudal area with undulate inner margin.

Ventral side ( Figures 9B View Figure 9 and 11B View Figure 11 ). All sternal setae short (c.15–16 µm), smooth and needle-like ( Figure 9C View Figure 9 ), but in some paratypes St1 and St2 longer (c.30–35 µm) than other sternal setae ( Figure 9D View Figure 9 ). St1 situated at level of central area of coxae II, St2 at level of posterior margin of coxae II, St3 at level of central area of coxae III and St4 at level of central area of coxae IV. One pair of lyriform fissures placed near anterior margin of sternal shield, another pair near basal edges of genital shield. Surface of sternal and ventral shields covered by oval pits. Pedofossae deep, their surface smooth and furrows for tarsi IV present. Six pairs of ventral setae smooth and needle-like, V1 short (c.17 µm), other smooth setae long (c.35–50 µm), two pairs of ventral setae marginally pilose and c.35 µm. Adanal setae smooth and needle-like, ad1 shorter (c.8 µm) than ad2 (c.30 µm). Postanal setae long (c.65 µm) and marginally pilose. Genital shield linguliform, without anterior process, its surface covered by oval pits ( Figure 9C, D View Figure 9 ). Genital shield placed between coxae II and IV. Stigmata situated between coxae II and III, peritremes R-shaped.

Tritosternum ( Figure 9E View Figure 9 ) with narrow basis, tritosternal laciniae bearing one pair of lateral spines and apically divided into two smooth branches.

Gnathosoma ( Figure 10A View Figure 10 ). Corniculi horn-like, internal malae smooth and longer than corniculi. Hypostomal setae h1 long (ca. 35 µm) smooth and apically obtuse, h2 smooth and needle-like (ca. 18 µm), h3 long (ca. 47 µm) and needle-like, h4 (ca. 15 µm) marginally with two spines. Epistome marginally pilose. Fixed digit of chelicerae longer than movable digit, large teeth absent, cheliceral node present ( Figure 10B View Figure 10 ). Palp trochanter with one long, pilose and one short, serrate setae, other setae on palp smooth.

Legs ( Figure 10C–E View Figure 10 ). Bearing smooth and simple setae, the first legs with ambulacral claws.

Description of male

Length of idiosoma 510–540 µm, width 370–390 µm (n = 3). Shape and dorsal aspect of idiosoma same as in female.

Ventral side ( Figure 7A View Figure 7 ). Sternal setae short (c.6–8 µm), smooth and needle-like. St1 situated at level of anterior margin of coxae II, St2 at level of posterior margin of coxae II, St3 at level of central area of coxae III, St4 at level of anterior margin of coxae IV, St5 near margin of genital shield. One pair of lyriform fissures placed near St5. Surface of sternal shield ornamented by oval pits. Genital shield circular, without sculptural pattern and situated between coxae IV. Ventral setation, processes of gnathosoma and legs same as in female.

Nymphs and larva

Unknown.

Etymology

The name of the new species refers to the island where it was collected.

Remarks

By now, 22 Castriidinychus species are described from South America, Australia (Wiśniewski 1993) and Tasmania ( Dylewska et al. 2010). Seven of them – C. anguinus Hirschmann 1973; C. castrii (Hirschmann 1972); C. dentatus (Hirschmann 1972); C. dentatoides Hirschmann 1973; C. eupunctatosimilis Hirschmann 1973; C. marginalis (Hirschmann and Zirngiebl-Nicol 1972) and C. similidentatus Hirschmann 1973 – have a short or long process on anterior margin of female genital shield, whereas this process is absent on genital shield of female in the new species and the others of this genus. Eight species of this genus (C. baloghi Hirschmann, 1975; C. castriisimilis Hirschmann, 1973; C. dictyoeides Hirschmann, 1973; C. eupunctatus Hirschmann, 1973; C. flavooides Hirschmann, 1973; C. maeandralis Hirschmann, 1973; C. robynae Dylewska et al., 2010 and C. tasmanicus Dylewska et al., 2010) have uniform ventral setae. Needle-like ventral setae are subequal in length in six described species – C. ditrichus (Hirschmann and Zirngiebl-Nicol, 1972); C. flavus Hirschmann, 1973; C. kaszabi Hirschmann, 1975; C. mahunkai Hirschmann, 1975; C. paucistructurus Hirschmann, 1973; C. topali Hirschmann, 1973, but the ventral setae are different in length in the C. longisetosus Dylewska et al., 2010 and in the new species. Setae V1, V2 and V3 of C. longisetosus are uniform in length, whereas V1 of the new species is shorter than V2 and V3. The surface of genital shield in female of the known species is smooth; this surface is covered by oval pits in the new species. Pilose setae can only be found on the anterior margin of the body in C. longisetosus, but the new species bears pilose setae on the dorsal shield as well.
