Holotype: Colombia, Meta, PNN Sumapaz Qda. La Cristalina , 3°48’S, 73°50’W, 614 m, Malaise, 20-viii– 5.ix.2003, H. Vargas Leg., M.4342 GoogleMaps / Holotype Bruchia scapularis Staines 2006 [red label] ( IVAH) .

Pale yellow with brownish and whitish markings; basal two antennomeres dark, remainder brownish; apex of tibiae and tarsi darker. Head: medial fovea with strong medial sulcus continuing between antennae; vertex sparsely punctate. Antenna: barely reaching base of pronotum; antennomere I expanded to apex, granulose; II transverse, granulose, ¾ length of I; III subcylindrical, subequal in length to I; IV–VI transverse, each wider than preceding; VII elongate setose club, pointed at apex; III–VI punctate with setae; VII setose. Pronotum: convex; depressed basally; widest just behind anterior margin; lateral margin sinuate and divergent for basal ¾s then strongly angled and convergent; anterior angle with large rounded tooth; posterior angle acute; base strongly densely punctate; apex less densely punctate; slight medial longitudinal callus; pronotal length 0.6 mm; pronotal width 0.8 mm. Scutellum: quadrate, smooth. Elytron: lateral margin dentate, expanding to apex, slightly explanate; apical margin sparsely dentate, slightly explanate; humerus produced, angulate; 8 rows of deeply impressed punctures plus short scutellar row; puncture rows 5–6 expanded to additional rows in pit after middle; interspace 2 costate for entire length, with two large tubercules, the first on basal ¼ th, the second after middle, costa slightly sinuate; interspace 3 costate, more pronounced after base; interspace 6 costate on base and apex; elytral length 2.4 mm; elytral width 1.3 mm. Leg: tibia with row of setae on inner margin, tuft of setae at apex; femur impunctate. Venter: prosternum punctate medially, smooth laterally; meso- and metasterna smooth medially and sparsely punctate laterally; abdominal sternites impunctate with row of white setae apically. Total length 3.3 mm.

Etymology. From scapula (Latin= shoulder-blade) for the elevated humeral process of this species.

Comparative notes. This species is easily distinguished by the distinctly elevated humerus. The vertex of the head is punctate with a medial fovea; the lateral margin of the pronotum is angulate beyond the middle; and elytral puncture rows 5–6 are expanded after the middle.
