Adult ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Wing span 13.5–18.5 mm. Frons with smooth and yellowish-white scales, vertex covered by erect yellowish-brown scales. Antenna of male with scape dilated slightly, brownish-yellow on ventral side, dark brown on dorsal side, length about 3 times of width; flagellum dark brown, ciliated ventrally; female with scape not dilated, concolorous with male; flagellum without cilia as in male. Labial palpus of male upturned; first segment yellow, mixed with fuscous scales, about half length of second segment; second segment with outer side fuscous, inner side yellow, ventral side with a cluster of yellow scales apically, about 3 times as long as third segment; third segment broad and porrect slightly; female with third segment slim and short, second segment about 2.5 times of third segment. Maxillary palpus fuscous, same length as third segment of labial palpus. Proboscis with fuscous scales at base. Patagium and tegula fuscous. Fore- and midlegs fuscous, tibia of midlegs covered by rough hairs; hindlegs with femur fuscous, mixed with yellow slightly, tibia and tarsus brownish-yellow, spurs of tibia fuscous on outer side, yellow on inner side. Abdomen with basal three segments fuscous dorsally, distal segments brownish-yellow. Forewing ground color fuscous, basal and costal areas suffused with reddish-brown scales; antemedial line pale yellow, oblique from basal 1/3 of costa to basal 1/3 of dorsum, slightly sinuated, enlarged into an irregularly triangular patch at costa; postmedial line pale yellow, discontinuous, oblique from distal 1/3 of costa to distal 1/5 of dorsum, slightly sinuated, enlarged into an oval patch at costa, arched between vein M1 to CuA2; median area with several pale yellow spots on costa; terminal line absent; fringe fuscous. Hind wing concolorous with forewing; ante- and postmedial lines pale yellow, sinuated, antemedial line with an interval between vein CuA2 and 1A, postmedial line distinct on ventral side of hind wing; fringe fuscous.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Uncus cone-shaped, with setae on lateral sides; gnathos slim, hooked distally, about 2/3 length of uncus, lateral arms band-shaped, slightly curved. Valva with basal area smooth, distal half triangular, hairy, rounded at apex; sacculus narrowly banded, slightly concave inward ventrally, with a slender thorn-shaped process arising from its base, extending horizantally, about same length as uncus, with a thorn-shaped process apically. Juxta tongue-shaped, scobinate on distal half, bifid at apex. Saccus cylindrical, rounded at apex. Aedeagus cylindrical, about 1.2 times length of valva, slightly curved at middle, cornuti composed of a row of 8–12 thorns spreading in anterior half.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 3 ). Papillae anales short, triangular in shape, apophyses posteriores slim, about 1.7 times as long as apophyses anteriores. Antrum well-developed, posterior part with two pad-shaped areas covered by minute spines, anterior part funnel-shaped, with minute spines on inner surface. Ductus bursae rather slim, about 1.2 times as long as corpus bursae, scobinate on inner surface, posterior part slightly broad and sclerotized. Corpus bursae membranous and oval in shape; signum rather small, consisting of several irregularly shaped sclerites.

Diagnosis. The new species resembles M. yamamotoi Yamanaka, 1996 , but can be distinguished from the latter by the combination of the following characters: the slender cone-shaped uncus, the valva without setae on basal half, the sacculus with a thorn-shaped apical process in the male genitalia, the ductus bursae about 1.2 times as long as the corpus bursae, and the smaller signum composed of irregularly shaped sclerites in the female genitalia. In M. yamamotoi , the genitalia is characterized by the broad apex of uncus, valva covered entirely by setae, sacculus without thorn-shaped process apically, ductus bursae about 2 times as long as the corpus bursae, and the larger signum formed by tooth-shaped sclerites.

Distribution. China (Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan).

Etymology. The name of the new species is derived from the Latin acanthus (spinose) which refers to the thornshaped process at the middle of valva in the male genitalia.
