Etymology. The epithet honors Marie Louise Goodnight, who collected the material on which the new species is based.

Material examined. Holotype male, in preparation. MEXICO, Chiapas, Cacahuatan, Finca Guatemoc, Quinine grove, 975.m, Berlese sample leaf mold, 3–4.viii.1950, C. & M. Goodnight coll., INHS 579,843; 2 females paratypes in preparation and 3 juveniles in alcohol same information as holotype.

Description. Size up to 2.0 mm.

Color p attern. Head, antennae and body more or less uniformly black; legs black to femur, tip of femur and whole of tibiotarsus light colored or white ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D).

Head. Antennae up to 1.9x head diagonal. Subapical sense organ with guard sensillum large ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 B), sensillum in pit not seen. Main sensilla of sense organ Ant. 3 with laterally extended membrane. Eyes 6–8, eyes G and H greatly reduced, seen only in largest individual, not visible in holotype; eye valley with 4–5 ciliate chaetae. Head dorsally ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 A) with 4 anterior (A0, A2, M2, S3) and 2 posterior (Pa5, Pm3) macrochaetae. Pre-labral chaetae ciliate. Denticles on distal margin of labrum minute, with base fused, wide ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 C). Labial triangle with M1M2M3rEL1L2A1-5: series M with up to 5 chaetae; r stout and smooth all other posterior chaetae ciliate. Postlabial field with 5–7 chaetae between columns I and O.

Body. Body macrochaetae 5(6)0/0243+0+5. Mesothorax with 1 anterior (a5) and 5 posterior (p3 complex) macrochaetae; p3 complex includes 1 micro- or mesochaeta as shown in Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 E-F. Metathorax without macrochaetae. Abd. 1 chaeta a6 present. Abd. 4 ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 G) pseudopore in field posterior to bothriotrix T4; inner macrochaetae A3, A5 and B5 present; A3 anterior to T2, almost paired with F1; macrochaeta A5 closer to pseudopore than to macrochaeta B5; 5 lateral macrochaetae present, macrochaeta F2 absent. Abd. 4 posterior chaetae 18–19+18–19.

Legs. Trochanteral organ with at least 23 chaetae. Tenent hair as long as unguiculus, acuminate on fore and middle legs ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 D), spatulate on hind legs ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 H); fore and middle claws with 2 inner teeth, hind claw with 3 inner teeth; one basal tooth slightly larger than other, unpaired tooth, when present, as long as shortest basal tooth; inner teeth spread as 32%, 32%, 52%. Dorsal and lateral teeth ending on basal quarter of unguis. Unguiculus lanceolate, posterior edge smooth.

Furcula. Dens with 2 rows of ciliate spines: inner row with 25–30 spines; outer row with 16–24 spines. Mucro with 4 teeth, basal teeth appearing subpaired on dorsal view ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 I) but not on lateral view ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 J), 1.9–2.1x as long as width of distal end of dens and 0.70x as long as inner margin of hind unguis.

Remarks. Trogolaphysa marielouiseae sp. nov. is unique among Neotropical species in being almost completely black, having 4 head macrochaetae in the particular combination A0, A2, M2, S3, in having 5 mesothoraxic macrochaetae in the p3 complex and the labral denticles with wide basal fusion. The new species has the same combination of head macrochaetae as T. geminata ( Mari Mutt, 1987) and T. clarencei sp. nov. ( Table 2 View TABLE 2 ), but, in addition to the character listed above, the three species differ in the number of chaetae M in the labial triangle (3–5 in T. marielouiseae sp. nov., 2 in the other two species), and the number of macrochaetae on the metathorax (3 in T. clarencei sp. nov., none in the other two species). Trogolaphysa laterolineata sp. nov. also has more than 2 labial chaetae M, but it differs from T. marielouiseae sp. nov. in having 4 macrochaetae on Abd. 4 and in the shape of the labral denticles.
