Diagnosis of Paralister species from the Balkans
Members of the subgenus Paralister Bickhardt, 1917 of the genus Margarinotus Marseul, 1853 from the Balkans differ from the other subgenera of the genus by the combination of the following characters: 1) pronotum with single lateral pronotal stria; 2) marginal pronotal stria shortened apically, not attaining posterior pronotal angles. Except for one ( M. (P.) purpurascens (Herbst, 1792)) completely black species.
The “Balkans” region is defined as containing the following countries and territories: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Turkey (European part) and Greece. For more information on the morphological differences, biology and distribution of the species (including numerous illustrations) of the Paralister members the reader is referred to the work of Kryzhanovskij & Reichardt (1976).
