Holotype female ( Figs. 1, 2 View Figs ): Oval; 4.9 mm long, 2.8 mm wide; very dark reddish brown throughout; setae pale orange throughout, except white on lower sides of pronotum, coxae, meso- and metasterna and legs; setae dense and slender around eyes, rostrum glabrous; setae ovate on lower portion of mesepisterna, long and hair-like on coxae and meso- and metasterna, shorter and linear elsewhere, very small on elytra; pattern of setae complex: pronotum with 3 irregular longitudinal fasciae of sparse setae, glabrous along midline and between fasciae; elytra with transverse chevron of setae on intervals 1 and 2 at middle, elsewhere with small patches of setae alternating with glabrous patches in irregular checkerboard pattern; metasternum glabrous except anterior margin with hair-like setae and sides and metepisternum with inconspicuous setae in punctures, upper 2/3 of epimeron with dense, conspicuous orange setae; abdominal ventrite 1 with inconspicuous setae in punctures at middle, larger and paler on sides, abdominal ventrites 2–5 more densely setose; setae linear on femora, but with dark glabrous area on dorsal surface beyond middle.

Head convex from above, eyes very large, acute beneath, separated by narrow space with two rows of setae becoming nearly contiguous at apex; rostrum 1.7 mm long, slender, carinate along midline, on lateral margins, and between midline and margins, and finely punctate above antennal insertions, minutely punctate and polished beyond, weakly, regularly arcuate, antennae inserted at basal 1/3, second segment of funicle slightly less than 2X first. Pronotum 1.3 mm long at middle, 1.2 mm wide at apex, 2.0 mm wide at base, with lateral margins nearly straight, slightly convex in lateral view, coarsely punctate on disc, less strongly so on sides with intervals shining, midline broadly ridged and impunctate. Elytra 1.4X wider than pronotum, margins gently rounded attenuate, apices conjointly rounded; elytral striae narrower than intervals 1–3, then

intervals becoming progressively narrower, less strongly punctate and somewhat shining. Mesosternum strongly excavate at middle and surrounded by U-shaped carina and with protruding truncate lobes on posterior margin exterior to cavity; anterior margin of metasternum transversely, shallowly excavate; metepisterna with medial broad, polished longitudinal ridge. In lateral view, ventrite 1 as long as ventrites 2–5 combined, shallowly impressed along midline, ventrites 1 and 2 ascending, ventrites 3–5 narrow, vertical. Legs long; anterior coxae with acute tooth on inner posterior margin; all femora carinate externally and armed with very small acute tooth at end of carina on inner ventral margin at apical 2/3, posterior femora with broadly acute tooth on interior apical angle, 2.0 mm long, posterior tibiae 1.3 mm long.

Allotype male: As female except orange setae only slightly paler than ground color, so pattern virtually indistinct ( Fig. 3 View Figs ); ventrite 1 broadly, shallowly concave with ridge at anterior margin; length 4.0 mm. Aedeagus illustrated in Figure 4 View Figs .

Etymology. This species is named for the early collectors of series of this species and students of the ecology of Cocos Island’s endemic terrestrial avifauna, Thomas Sherry and Tracey Werner.

Discussion. Hoplocopturus sherrywernerorum is the most frequently collected of the two conoderine species on Cocos Island. It is the species referred to as ‘‘Genus near Copturus ’’ by Hogue and Miller (1981:16) and therefore probably the species in the diet of N. ridgwayi ( Sherry 1985) . The pattern of setae is reminiscent of species of Lechriops with the sutural and submarginal elytral spots, although this pattern also occurs in such typical Hoplocopturus as H. costatipennis Champion and H. ochreicollis Champion. Of the 39 specimens examined, only 3 were males. It is not clear whether this reflects a female-biased sex ratio or is an artifact of collecting. The sexual dimorphism in appearance is interesting, with males looking sufficiently different from females that I initially suspected that two species were represented. Similar sexual dimorphism in appearance also occurs in H. varipes Champion. The 36 females averaged 4.61 mm in length (range, 3.70– 5.40 mm); the three males, 4.40 mm (range, 4.00– 4.80 mm).
