Cancer simmonsi Curtiss, 1938

Cancer litteratus Fabricius, 1798: 342 .

Cancer simmonsi Curtiss, 1938: 176 , n. syn.

The description of the carapace, live colour and habitat, “in sweet-water creeks” ( Curtiss 1938: 176) easily identifies this species with Varuna litterata ( Fabricius, 1798) (Varunidae) View in CoL , a species common in French Polynesia ( Poupin & Juncker 2010). An allied species, V. yui Hwang & Takeda, 1986 View in CoL , also occurs in the western part of the Pacific, but this species does not reach so far east ( Ng 1988, 1998).
