gen. nov.

Iranodendrothrips gen. n.

( Figs 12–19 View FIGURES 12 – 19 )

Type species. Iranodendrothrips kamalii sp. n.

Female macroptera. Head transverse, distinctly broader than long, cheeks short, slightly concave ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12 – 19 ), with two pairs of small ocellar setae, pair I absent, pair III arising in front of hind ocelli, with no postocular setae and no sculpture; eyes with 6 pigmented facets; mouth cone broad, rounded at apex, extending to posterior margins of fore coxae; maxillary palps short with 2 segments ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 12 – 19 ). Antennae 8-segmented ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 12 – 19 ), III and IV with forked sense cones. Pronotum broader than long, with few indistinct lines of sculpture, without any posteroangular setae, discal setae minute and subequal in length to anterior and posterior marginal setae ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12 – 19 ); ferna divided. Mesonotum with no campaniform sensilla; mesothoracic sternopleural sutures present; metanotum with very fine longitudinal sculpture laterally, medially with weak sculpture, median pair of setae situated far from anterior margin, the lateral pair situated near anterior margin, without campaniform sensilla ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 12 – 19 ). Fore wing with relatively straight posterior margin, uniformly covered with microtrichia, vein setae very small but distinguishable from microtrichia; basal and medial costal setae small, extending to fore wing anterior margin, but with 6–7 distinct long setae in distal area near to apex; apex bluntly rounded, with one slightly long apical seta ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 12 – 19 ); anteromarginal cilia arise ventrally behind margin ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 12 – 19 ), but closer to margin near wing base; posterior cilia not wavy. Tarsi all 1-segmented; hind tarsi not elongate. Tergites I–VIII with median setae long and close together, increasingly long on each tergite, segment I with median setae small, as long as the distance between them; lateral thirds of tergites II–VIII with transverse lines of sculpture; VIII with complete marginal comb of short microtrichia. Sternites each with three pairs of small marginal setae.

Male macroptera. Abdomen with no sternal pore plates.

Comments. This new genus is similar to the genera Dendrothrips and Filicopsothrips in the following characters states: fore wing anteromarginal cilia arising submarginally on the ventral surface, prosternal ferna divided, maxillary palps 2-segmented, pronotum with few lines of sculpture, and fore wing with relatively straight posterior margin. However, the fore wing apex bears a prominent seta in the new species in contrast to Dendrothrips species, moreover the fore wing costal marginal setae are longer, extending to the anterior margin, especially on the distal area.

The Pacific genus Filicopsothrips can be distinguished from Iranodendrothrips by 9-segmented antennae, ocellar setae arising between posterior ocelli, eyes without pigmented facets, one pair of dominant posteroangular setae, fore wing apex with two curved apical setae and with the anterior margin curving very slightly to meet a relatively straight posterior margin. In the new species described below only the basal cilia arise close to the margin, however in Filicopsothrips both basal and distal cilia arise closer to margin (see Mound 1999).
